Single Hung Window Basics

The most popular replacement window style on the market are double hung windows. These have two movable sashes, one at the top and one at the bottom. Alternatively, the single hung window has a single sash at the bottom of the window. So while there are less ventilation options than with double hung windows, single hungs still allow for a breeze.

However, there is a significant upside, which is less moving parts, which can breakdown over time and cause problems. Additionally, SHWs (when made well) should be more energy efficient than double hungs - especially as the windows age over time.

Window Frame Price Ranges

One of the main drivers of cost is window frame material. While vinyl window costs are the least expensive of the five options (and has the biggest share of the replacement market by quite a bit), wood windows are the most expensive.

In between these are aluminum, composite, and fiberglass. Generally speaking, single hung windows will run $50 to $100 less than a similar double hung. Here are some general price ranges that you can expect to pay.

WINDOW MATERIAL PRICE RANGE
Vinyl $350 to $1,200
Aluminum $1,100 to $2,400
Composite $1,250 to $2,600
Fiberglass $1,400 to $2,500
Wood $1,500 to $3,500

Energy Efficiency Considerations

There was a time when single hung windows were considered a sub par window. That was mainly due to the fact that quality manufacturers didn’t bother with single hung windows. Today however, lots of high end manufacturers do produce single hung windows.

Interestingly, single hungs are often some of the most energy efficient windows that money can buy. (But certainly not always as poorly made single hungs will have sub par performance data.) That’s because there is. Single opening mechanism (as opposed to double hungs). Here are several examples of performance data offered by single hung windows.

Alpen Zenith Series (Fiberglass) .03 air infiltration rating
Don Young 8200 .03 air infiltration rating
Gerkin 6100 Series .04 air infiltration rating
Ideal Majest .02 air infiltration rating

MI V3000 series

We went to a window company that recommended the MI V3000 series, the 1620 single hung. We want single hung windows. We got a quote for $3,200 for the replacement of just 3 windows. The windows quoted were $500 each and the labor, quoted separately, was $1,700. This company uses its own employees and they use quality materials (OSI foam and caulking and Torx screws).

They offered $50 off the cost of each window, when I asked if they offered any senior citizen discounts. The final cost of the quote was $3,050. However, effective 8/31/25, this company is closing their doors (after 15+ years) and so we are back to square one.

Janine, there is no way that the MI V3000 series is worth $1000 a window installed. The MI V4000, V4500, V5500 series are a different story but not the 1620 series. Besides that, I would never buy windows from a company that's going out of business and can't even offer a labor warranty on the product. I'll tell you what, I am going to send you a list of quality SH windows along with a single hung window replacement cost guide (take it with a grain of salt as all project bids will be specific to your particular project).

Tempe Arizona Replacement Windows

Hi Bill, I'm located in Tempe, AZ and am in the process of getting estimates for vinyl window replacements. I'm looking for energy efficient windows. I've spoken to representatives selling Simonton and Anlin windows. List of Windows: 6 - 36 x 60 Single Hung, 1 - 41 x 60 Single Hung, 1 - 24 x 36 Single Hung, 1 - 72 x 84 Slider XO includes top eyebrow, 1 - 108 x 84 Slider XOX includes top eyebrow, 2 - 72 x 60 Slider XO, 1 - 60 x 60 Slider XO, 1 - 42 x 40 Slider XO, 2 - 24 x 60 Picture, 2 - 49 x 59 Picture with Tempered glass (master tub), 1 - 10 x 84 Picture with Tempered glass (side of front door), 1 - 49 x 18 eyebrow above front door, and 1 - 60 x 18 eyebrow family room

Prices with installation:
Simonton Windows - with ProSolar Low-E, Argon - $24,989
Simonton - with ProSolar Shade, Argon and Supercept Spacer - $26,421
Anlin Windows Panoramic - Infini-e glass, Argon - $22,470 (might consider upgrade to Sun Matrix)
Anlin Del Mar Extended - Sun Matrix, Argon - $29,996 (this includes a Full Tear Out for the front door Picture and eyebrow)

I am leaning towards the Anlin Panoramic based on your reviews of Anlin vs Simonton. Also, the company selling the Panoramic has good reviews, employee installers, no BBB or ROC complaints and has been in business for 27 years. They are currently the lowest price. However, they don't have a showroom - so that reduces overhead and they seem to get most of their business via word of mouth and have consistent good reviews. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Margarita, flashing tape is a nice feature, but not necessary as long as the installers do a professional job with the caulk and spray foam. Best to look at the company's overall reviews as a key indicator of how well you can expect your job to go. I agree with you on the Anlin Panoramic quote -- the lowest price and a high quality vinyl window. That would be my call here as well!

PGT Windows or Apex

Hi Bill, wondering if you'd be willing to offer your thoughts on the 3 quotes I received. Note: I completely understand if I'm asking too much of you to review this. I have no preference single-hung or double-hung, although I had heard the single hung window replacement cost was less than double hungs.

Also, I have no preference with BR windows each being 1 window that is 88" tall or 2 windows (one of which is a top 36" x 16" non-movable window). I felt very comfortable with the sales guys from all three companies. No high-pressure tactics from any of them. Again, any thoughts you're willing to offer would be greatly appreciated! But I do realize I'm asking a lot; and if I'm asking more from you than what's reasonable, I completely understand.

*2 individual BR windows that are 36" x 88" (existing configuration has each one as actually 2 windows with the top window being a single, non-movable pane that's 36" x 16"). A set of 3 windows that looks like 1 really wide window -- each end window is 72" x 24" and the middle is 72" x 36". The set of 3 windows also has 1 half-circle window above the middle window which is 36" x 18"

They are all the original single-hung, single-pane, aluminum windows that were installed when my house was built in 1994 [Tampa, FL].

West Coast Windows
*PGT 5500 series single-hung vinyl -
*Treating the BR windows as 1 each that is 88" tall
*$13,858 includes $3,000 installation [they're located in St. Pete and have to travel 40 miles to my house]

Carrollwood Window & Door
*PGT SH5400 single-hung vinyl
*Treating the BR windows as 1 each that is 88" tall
*$7,715 [includes a 10% promotional discount] includes $1,650 installation

Apex Insignia Windows Cost
*Insignia double-hung vinyl
*Treating each BR window as 2 windows (keeps the 36" x 16" non-movable window at the top)
*$10,813 includes cost of window installation [they did not break out the pricing]

Dave, I definitely like the Carrollwood Window & Door bid for the price -- I also like the PGT SH5400 single-hung that they are installing. That's a solid window. Review-wise Carrolwood doesn't knock my socks off. However, if there was a way to guarantee that their installation team would do a great job, then that would be my pick. Maybe call them up and say you are interested but you will wait for their very best install team (maybe they only have one team...) I do like the Apex Insignia (which is now mostly the Champion vinyl window these days). The Tampa Apex windows gets much better reviews (at least with the cursory search I did) - Apex is also clever about the ways they get customers to leave reviews so I'm always a bit hesitant about that. Does this help? It's not quite the clear cut answer I like to have --
